Heraklion, the capital and largest city of Crete, blends a deep past with a lively present. Centuries of Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman influence are visible in its historic core: the elegant Venetian Loggia that now houses City Hall, the beloved Morosini (Lions) Fountain in the central square, and the impressive circuit of Venetian walls that once guarded the city and harbor. At the waterfront, the 16th-century Koules (Rocca a Mare) fortress still stands sentinel at the entrance to the old port, a striking emblem of Heraklion’s maritime heritage.

The city is a gateway to Europe’s earliest advanced civilization. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum—among the most important in Greece and Europe—showcases masterpieces of Minoan art and culture, while the celebrated Bronze Age palace of Knossos lies just a few kilometers southeast of the center, linking visitors directly to the world of King Minos.

Beyond its landmarks, Heraklion offers a vibrant seaside atmosphere, busy markets, and easy connections across the Aegean— including frequent ferries to the Cyclades. Together, these features make it a welcoming base for cultural exploration and island-hopping alike.

This year, the Conference will convene in this energetic and hospitable city, inviting participants to experience the unique spirit of Heraklion while engaging in an enriching academic and professional program.
